Dallas to Watkins Glen

Five Morgans in Search of Fun and Adventure

Day Five  - At The Glen

September 11th 2009

Watkins Glen One (Day 5)

It was an early start day. Breakfast at 7:30 and to the Wings of Eagles museum at the Elmira airport by 9:00 AM. We all timely checked in for the planned events.

First a tour to Watkins Glen International Raceway for a hosted brunch (i.e. breakfast 2). Then the Morgans lined up for two crisp laps around the Raceway. After that, the Morgans were escorted for two tours on the original Watkins Glenn course first used in 1948. It wound through the countryside on country roads, uphill and downhill, across train tracks and down through the main street of town. 6.7 miles. It was eye opening.

Then the Morgans were set forth on display in a nearby park. We, however, were allowed to venture down into town, where a full festival was in progress. Vendors lined both sides of the street for blocks, with merchandise, food, beer, etc. available. During this time, other tour groups taking the original race course tour would roar through the town at regular intervals. The last were the race cars themselves, which came down and were displayed along the main street. The street was then closed so spectators could mingle among the autos. A light misty rain started to arrive, but it didn't stop the concluding fireworks display or dampen the festivities.
