Auburn to Dallas

Five Morgans in Search of Fun and Adventure

Day 12 Auburn

September 27th 2009

Final Trek Home: Part One (Day 12)

The time’s come to commence the homeward journey. Hopefully it will continue to be without incident or rain. What was once a group of 5 is now the “3 Musketeers” (Nogueira, The Murphys , and the Boyles). The Fleners left after Watkins Glen. While Art & Patsy had rejoined the group in Auburn, they again headed off their own way to some reunion of Art’s. Darrel Van Dyke joined briefly in Auburn, but now has set off for Kentucky to visit relatives and friends.

So Sunday morning it was time to head back to Texas. Actually, it was barely Sunday morning, as departure wasn’t accomplished until 11:00a.m. (Eastern Time). Although the journey commenced in a light fog, it was soon replaced by a brilliant and sunny day. For the entire day, the ventures winded their way across Indiana and Illinois back roads, encountering the uniqueness of rural middle-America.

For example, an extraordinary expression of Community Pride was shown on a sign in Wingate, Indiana. The message read “Basketball State Champions 1913 and 1914.” Obviously, nothing as memorable has occurred in the area in the ensuing 95 years! Earlier, a cross-country unicycle rider was passed along the way. Also, as expected, many towns and villages were celebrating Fall Festivals or Autumn Carnivals, including barricaded downtown Auburn as we left to a flea market, classic/hot rod car show in Peoria, Illinois. Finally, we called it a day at 6:00p.m. (Central Time) in Olney, Illinois, after miles.
